Catalog of Bausch and Lomb Glasses


      This page is an effort to get the Bausch and Lomb glasses into a catalog on line. This catalog is for glasses that are no longer made to my knowledge but those who may have some glass made by Bausch and Lomb may be interested in getting the correct (as best that I can transcribe from a paper catalog) refractive indices for the glasses that Bausch and Lomb made.

I don't know the date of the catalog but indications are that it's from the '60s at the least as the ZIP code is included in the company address. That address is:

There is a number on the last page of the catalog (I have a xerox copy of it) with the number 43-30,0871. The thing that is interesting about this catalog is the number of partial dispersion values given.

Note that the glasses are defined only by their 6 digit reference number and grouped together by their basic type. For those who don't know how this number is put together, the first three digits are the first three digits of the Nd value - 1 (or the numbers to the right of the decimal point) and the second three numbers are the first 3 digits of the VD value (decimal point between the second and third digit is dropped).

Also note that these values are superseded if you have the exact melt indices that should come with every piece of optical glass. Those values are often a bit different than these "stock" values listed here and are what the glass really is. If you don't have a sheet containing the exact values, these values will do for most work but you may have to adjust one or more curves on the optical design after building the optic to make the design work to spec.

Notes:
Locations with a "*" in them are values not tested for. These values that are missing are in the infrared and ultraviolet colors and some Stain Test times.
Locations with a "**" in them are glasses that dissolve in HNO3
Glasses with a § marked after them were also available with a non-browning formulation so that in the face of high gamma radiation they didn't brown like normal glass will and were marked with the number and a "P" after them. If you find such a glass, all that is really different is that it can be used in a nuclear reactor without the browning problems that normal glasses would do. Also, as a result of the conditioning, the transmission is slightly less than that of the regular glass, mostly in the short wavelengths over 500microns.

For other glass catalogs you may want to go to the Schott website which has a Windows program which has their whole catalog in an interesting program and then there is the OHara website which has a catalog in Excel format (unfortunately, I don't have a copy of Excel which is new enough to read the file) which shows all of their glasses and also another file which relates their glass names with that of the Schott system.
Sorry that there are two tables but otherwise the page would be extremely wide. The best thing to do is to take and copy the tables to your word processor and print in a font size that fits the page. There is a space after each entry so you can do a global search for a space and change into something else like a tab character and thus get the proper spacing.
This whole catalog has been hand typed into the page so there may be transcription errors. If you find any, please let me know. I have done as good as I can to make sure that there are no errors but there is always the possibility of there being one or more. I will again admonish those who are actually making a refractor using these glasses to use the actual refractive indices that the melt sheet shows rather than these ones as you will end up with a better refractor with them. Preliminary design is what these charts are for and this is what you should consider them to be worth. Do the basic design and finalize the design with the melt data.
